Helen Luella Norton, 90 of Independence, MO joined with the angels Monday, September 21, 2015 at Rosewood Health Center, Independence.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m., until service time Sunday at the chapel. Graveside services will be held at the Elm Lawn Cemetery in Princeton, IL at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 3, 2015.
Helen was born in Pana, IL on September 22, 1924 to Jess and Forest (Eaton) Robison. She was raised in Vandalia, IL and graduated from Ramsey High School in 1942. Helen enjoyed a good career as a telephone operator with Illinois Bell, eventually becoming a senior supervisor and instructor. She met the love of her life, Ernest Eugene Norton, and they were married on April 7, 1952 and enjoyed 53 years together before his passing on September 7, 2003.
She was a beloved wife, mother, nana, aunt and friend. Being a homemaker and loving her family was her greatest joy in life. She taught Sunday School and Bible School, was active as a Boy Scout den mother, and active with the PTA and T.O.P.S. club. She loved to write poetry and had been frequently published in several local newspapers, church publications and monthly newsletters through out the years. She enjoyed reading and always loved to visit with friends and relatives. In 2003 she moved to the Independence area and was a member of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Surviving are son, Stan Norton (Sue) of Mountain City, TN and daughter, Becky Anderson De Vries (Charlie) of Independence, MO; 3 grandchildren, Devin Norton, Josh Anderson and Katie Rogers (Ash). She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Bev Robison and a brother, Paul Duncan.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Rosewood Health Center and the Rehabilitation Center of Independence for their care and compassion in her final days. A special thank you to the RN’s, staff and volunteers of the Groves Community Hospice for their incredible unwavering care, sensitivity and support given to not only Helen, but to our family as well. You made the final days so much more bearable.
