Mary was born March 12, 1925 to parents, George and Ruby (Fletcher) McDaniel of Noble, MO. At age 16, she moved to Kansas City, working first as a waitress. She then entered a career of 36 years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where she enjoyed her friends and co-workers. Mary was especially proud of her union and served as Vice President of Communication Workers of American for the Kansas City Local.
On December 12, 1948 she married Charles Harris Nowlin, who worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad. Together they reared their children in Independence, MO.
After retiring to the rural area of Lincoln, MO her cherished husband passed away in 1995. Mary then returned to the Kansas City area to be near her family.
Mary enjoyed cooking large dinners for her family, celebrating Christmas, traveling, and being with her grandchildren whom she adored. In her later years she delighted in her dear friends at Hidden Lake Village Retirement Center. She lived a full and active life until a few days before her passing. In those final days she was held and surrounded by the people that loved her.
Mary was preceded in death by her cherished husband, Charles Harris Nowlin; two infant sons; a sister, Leona Essex; and a brother, Eulice McDaniel. She is survived by two sons: Charles “Al” Nowlin and wife Phyllis and Daniel “Dan” Nowlin and wife Cheryl; four grandchildren: Elaina, Jason, Erica, and Brett; one great-granddaughter, Saphira; one brother, Irvin McDaniel; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins that she cared for deeply.
Mary Sybil Nowlin was strong, loving, and self-reliant with an abundantly generous heart. Her passing as left a great void in our family. May God’s comfort rest upon her.
