Virgil Oliver, 90, of Independence, MO passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at his home. A visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM Friday, October 3 at Carson-Speaks Chapel. Services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday at the Chapel with burial to follow at Floral Hills Cemetery. Contributions may be made to either the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.
Virgil was born March 12, 1918 in Calhoun County, Arkansas and grew up near Hampton, Arkansas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then moved to the Independence area. He was employed with Amoco Oil as a pipe fitter for 33 years prior to his retirement in 1978. Virgil is a lifetime member of the Mt. Washington Masonic Lodge, the VFW in Independence, and a faithful member of the Susquehanna Baptist Church.
Virgil was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Oliver; son, Virgil Lee Oliver; and second wife, Georgia Oliver. He is survived by his daughter Grace Thornton of Independence; two nieces; four nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
