Fern Elizabeth Parks, 101½, passed away Friday, June 03, 2011 at Kansas City Hospice House.
A Celebration of Fern’s Life will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Carson-Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave. Independence, MO. Burial to follow at Mt. Washington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northern Boulevard United Methodist Church.
Fern was born October 22, 1909 in Bevier, MO the daughter of Elbert Edmond and Susan Jane (Ammerman) Garrett. Fern and Lawrence W. Parks, Sr., were married on September 1, 1929. Along with her husband they helped to organize and operate for many years the Bristol Teen Town. Fern was an active member of the Independence Pioneer Chapter; Daughters of the American Revolution, having held several positions. She was also a member of the 17th Century Colonial Dames; Magna Carta Dames, American Colonists; Jamestown Society; and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Fern attended the Northern Blvd. United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Women’s Circle. She enjoyed her numerous hobbies, which included sewing, knitting, quilt making, and she was an accomplished artist in oil, tole and china painting.
Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence W. Parks, Sr., in 1994; son, Stephen Garrett Parks; sister, Margaret Fowler and her parents.
Survivors include her children, Patricia Susan (Parks) Benson; Lawrence Wayne Parks, Jr. and his wife Mary; and Marilyn Fern (Parks) Toutellotte; ten grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
