J. Mearle Patterson, 80, of Independence, MO passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2015. A visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 21st at Speaks Suburban Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 22nd at the chapel. Burial will be at Floral Hills, Kansas City, MO.
Mearle was born October 11, 1934 as one of three boys to Clarence E. and Elsie Abigail (Cowell) Patterson. As share croppers they moved around the SE Missouri region. He graduated from Bell City High School, class of 1953. Mearle proudly served in the US Air Force from 1954-57. He returned home on leave to marry his beloved Patsy Ruth (Gibson) on January 5, 1957. He started his job with Dupont in St. Louis and they eventually settled in Kansas City in 1966. There they would raise three children. He retired from Dupont as a Vendor Representative in 1996, within a year after losing his wife to cancer. Outside of work, Mearle was very handy and was always working on one mechanical job or another. He also enjoyed hunting at the family cabin. He supported his son’s scout participation and was deemed Honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He also supported his grandson’s participation in Special Olympics. His family remembers him as a hardworking, devoted, and strong willed man; who was also friendly, quick witted, and loving.
Survivors include brothers, Hollis Patterson (Jeanette) of Jackson, MO; and Larry Patterson (Janice) of Dexter, MO; daughter, Vicki Morris of Pittsburg, MO; daughter, Dawn Ritchie of Independence, MO; son, Anthony Patterson (Mark Evans) of Lee’s Summit, MO; grandchildren Aaron and Adam Paprocki; Nathan and Anna Ritchie; Leah Hansen; and Levi Morris; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends who will greatly miss him. He was preceded in death by his wife and grandson, David Ritchie. The family encourages contributions to Missouri Special Olympics in his memory.
