Born on October 3, 1950, in the vibrant city of San Francisco, California, Paula lived a life steeped in compassion and love balanced by a feisty and strong personality. She thrived in her career as a social worker, touching the lives of countless individuals. Even after her retirement, her giving spirit did not fade. She embraced her passion for animals by walking dogs part-time, a joyful endeavor that brought happiness to both her and her furry friends. She also fostered a loving and nurturing connection with all of her grandchildren, whose relationships she cherished. Paula reveled in simple pleasures and found great joy in her flower garden and landscaping, where she could express her creativity and nurture beauty. In her younger years, she found solace and excitement riding horses, another passion that enriched her life.
On March 30, 1974, Paula married Ron Toro, a partnership marked by deep affection and shared dreams. Together, they created a warm home in Meadow Vista, California, filled with laughter and love. In 2017, they embarked on a new chapter, moving to Chicago then Kansas City several years later, where Paula would continue to flourish. Paula’s proudest accomplishments revolved around her family. She is survived by her loving husband Ron; her sons, Brian Toro and his wife Jessika, and Matthew Toro and his wife Skye; grandchildren, Jayden, Merick, and Charlie; siblings, Laura Nelson, Karen Durham and her husband Don, Michael "Mickey" Kalend and his wife Denise, and her mother Ines Paula "Bunny" Kalend; extended family and dear friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Michael Kalend.
Paula departed this world surrounded by love, leaving her family and friends with cherished memories that will forever reside in their hearts. Her unwavering spirit of compassion, her dedication to family, and her zest for life will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.
