Irena Popanda, 85, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away July 26, 2010 at her home. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Graveside services at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 30, at Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery. Irena was born December 3, 1924 in Poland, to Stephan and Wictoria Musialik. At the age of 13, she and her family were sent to a Siberian labor camp, of which they all survived. In the early 1940’s, she was educated and trained as a nurse in India. Irena was a devout Roman Catholic. She was a wonderful mother and doting grandmother. She was a talented cook, baker, seamstress and gardener. Irena was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Popanda; and her first grandson, Steven M. Bowman. She is survived by her daughter, Halina Gay; and grandsons, Gabriel Bowman (SSG) and Andrew Bowman.
