Luella May (Bahr) Povenmire, 92, of Independence, Missouri, passed away on September 14, 2010 at the Rosewood Health and Rehabilitation Center. A visitation will be from 1-2:00 PM Monday, September 20 at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Avenue, Independence. Services will begin at 2:00 PM with burial to follow at Mt. Washington Cemetery.
Luella was born one of five children on November 20, 1917 in Gridley, Kansas, to Joseph and Rosa Bahr. She spent her childhood in Gridley and graduated from the Gridley High School. She then moved to Wichita and attended the Wichita Business College where she achieved a secretarial degree. She married her high school sweetheart W.L. “Junior” Povenmire in 1940; he passed away in December of 1997.
Luella held various secretarial jobs in addition to being a homemaker. She was a member of the Independence Young Matrons and enjoyed volunteering in her later years as a tour guide at the Bingham-Waggoner Estate in Independence. She was also a long-time member of the Waldo Avenue Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Independence. She was very active in her faith and was known for bringing fresh roses from her garden to various sick friends and members of the church.
Survivors include; children, John Povenmire and Marcia Longstaff; brother, Harold Bahr; grandchildren, Jeremy Povenmire, Mindy Hempler, Laura Wright and Karyn McAllister; and seven great grandchildren.
