Melvin R. Proffitt, 59 of Independence, MO passed away, Thursday, August 6, 2015 at his residence in Independence after a long illness of Type I Diabetes and COPD. Cremation is planned with a memorial service to be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055 with inurnment to follow in Concord Cemetery in Bates City, MO. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m., until service time Saturday at the chapel. Donations in his name may be made to St. Bridget of Kildare Scholarship Fund, 111 W. Union St., Pacific, MO 63069. Melvin R. was born February 25, 1956 in Lexington, MO to Melvin P. and Shirley (Mercer) Proffitt. He graduated from Fort Osage High School in 1974. He had worked as a telecommunications instructor and technician since the military, most recently as a technician for 10 years with Comm-Link Communications, Inc. in Wichita, KS. He enjoyed reading, watercolor painting, fly fishing and music. He was baptized into the Baptist church. He proudly served in the US Air Force from 1975-78. He is survived by: Althea (Hamilton) Proffitt, his wife of 36 years, a daughter, Karmen Proffitt, both of St. Peters, MO, son, Jason Proffitt (Cindy), of Pacific, MO, his mother, Shirley Proffitt, Independence, MO, sister, Melody Titus (Russel), Independence, MO and 3 grandchildren, Katelyn, Addison and Brayden of Pacific, MO.
