Born Feb. 6, 1915 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, Ruth was the daughter of William and Anna Elmes. She had five older siblings, two brothers and three sisters, all of whom are now deceased. She graduated from high school in Beaver Falls. Ruth married Ralph E. McCullough in 1931 and they had two children, Ralph and Anne. During the family’s early years, in addition to her household tasks, Ruth worked part-time and subsequently managed a children’s clothing store in Beaver Falls.
