With gratitude for a life well-lived, we remember Ragnhild Carlson, who passed away on July 29, 2026, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, at the age of 93. Born on November 28, 1932, in Oslo, Norway, Ragnhild’s journey was one marked by resilience, devotion, and boundless love - qualities that touched all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Ragnhild’s early years in Oslo instilled in her a deep appreciation for heritage and learning. In 1950, she received her high school diploma in her native city, a foundation that would set the stage for her lifelong commitment to knowledge and personal growth. In 1955, Ragnhild continued to broaden her horizons, earning her associate's degree in general studies from Graceland College in Missouri.
Throughout her years, Ragnhild channeled her intelligence and dedication into a meaningful professional life. From 1978 to 1990, she served as an administrative assistant for Community of Christ. Her meticulous nature, kindness, and uplifting spirit supported the community and made a lasting impression on her colleagues.
Outside the workplace, Ragnhild’s life flourished with culture, tradition, and service. She found joy and fulfillment as an active member of the Community of Christ congregation, eventually serving as an elder - a testament to the depth of her faith and her commitment to nurturing those around her. Her melodious voice often rang out in worship, whether as part of the esteemed church quartet that graced various venues in the community or lending her talents to the Good Shepherd choir, especially during performances of Handel’s Messiah in Independence. Through music and ministry, she enriched the lives of many, offering solace and inspiration in equal measure.
Home was where Ragnhild’s warmth shone most brightly. Family was her life’s greatest delight, particularly evident in the memories so fondly cherished by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She relished every opportunity to gather them at her home or support them in their extracurricular pursuits, always present with encouraging words and unwavering affection. Each Christmas Eve, her family eagerly looked forward to the feast she prepared: succulent pork roast, boiled potatoes, Norwegian flatbread, sauerkraut, and the comforting sweetness of rice pudding. This meal, far more than tradition, was an annual expression of heritage and familial love.
Ragnhild’s adventurous spirit never waned. She delighted in travel, returning to Norway to reconnect with family and enjoyed traveling locally, continuously broadening her horizons. These journeys were infused with curiosity and joy, reflecting her passion for both old roots and new experiences.
Ragnhild Carlson is lovingly survived by her sons, Jon Carlson (Delanne) and Jim Carlson (LisaKay); 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 nephews; 2 nieces; and her brother, Erling Fossum. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Dr. Harvey Clifford “Cliff” Carlson; her parents, Olaf and Mimi (Nilsen) Fossum; and her sister, Edith Kristiansen.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled at 3pm, Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Woods Chapel Community of Christ Church, 500 N.E. Woods Chapel Rd., Lee's Summit, Mo. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor can be made to Good Shepherd Community of Christ.
