Obituary

Ralph Wade Buchanan, affectionately known to many as "Buck," passed away on April 15, 2026, in Independence, Missouri. Born on August 6, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri, Ralph lived a life marked by a remarkable blend of enterprise, creativity, and heartfelt connections.

From his earliest days as a student at Van Horn High School, Ralph demonstrated a remarkable flair for communication and performance, a passion that led him to earn a degree in Theatre from the University of Missouri. His love for the stage intertwined beautifully with his many other talents throughout his life. Ralph was a man whose personality was truly larger than life. He thrived in the company of others, possessed an adventurous spirit, and was known for his quick wit and captivating storytelling. Whether recounting tales or sharing a clever joke, he had the unique ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him. His zest for life was evident in his many pursuits and interests, from his extraordinary skill as a magician—with a magic show that delighted audiences on PBS Kids in the early 1980s—to his enthusiasm for poker, where he worked as a dealer at Harrah’s.

His passions extended farther still, encompassing a love of politics, travel, skiing, and sailing—especially fond of destinations such as Cancun and Cabo, which held special memories for him. Ralph was also deeply committed to his community, proudly serving in the Missouri Army National Guard during the Vietnam War and participating as a dedicated member of the American Legion. Dancing was among his joys throughout life, a joy which he shared with his wife, Joni, often at the American Legion. Ralph and Joni attended high school together, but didn't connect until they had a chance online encounter. Their bond was instant, leading to their marriage on May 15, 2011. Together, they shared a life of companionship and joy, inseparable until the end. Ralph was also a devoted father, particularly cherishing his experiences sharing the world of theatre with his daughter, Haley Atkins. He would often take her behind the scenes, introducing her to casts and crews, instilling in her not only a love of theatre but also a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Ralph's passing is preceded by his parents, Harold and Grace Buchanan, and his stepson, Jeffrey Frakes. His legacy of love and laughter lives on through his wife, Joni Frakes; his daughter, Haley Atkins (Jay); his stepdaughter, Cheri Russell; his daughter-in-law, Mary Frakes Cordes; his grandchildren, Parker Atkins, Georgia Atkins, Phoebe Atkins, Graham Atkins, Jacob Russell, Kaitlyn Russell, Elizabeth Frakes, Sarah Frakes, and Emily Frakes; his brother, Cecil Buchanan (Gloria); his niece, Brandi Kamlieter, and his nephew, Ben Buchanan.

Ralph's family will greet guests during a visitation at Speaks Suburban Chapel on April 24, 2026, from 1-2 pm. A celebration of life will begin at 2 pm.
