Joe Kennedy Rhoades, 99 of Independence, MO passed away, Saturday July 16, 2011 at his residence. Services will be 7:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at the Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055. The family will greet friends from 5:30 until service time Tuesday at the chapel. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 20. 2011 at the Littell Cemetery near Pleasanton, KS. Joe was born December 26, 1911 in Weir, KS to John and Amy (Black) Rhoades. He had graduated from public schools in Tulsa, OK and had attended Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS. He had worked for over 42 years as a heavy equipment operator for the River Queen Local #1178 Union Mine Workers of America in Illinois and Kentucky before he retired in 1976. He enjoyed fishing, bird watching, gardening and traveling. He was a member of the Turner Masonic Lodge #548 in Earlington, KY and was an honorary Kentucky Colonel. He was also a member of Christ United Methodist church. He married Lorene Cantwell on April 10, 1981; she survives of the home. Other survivors include 2 nephews, 4 niece and a host extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by; his 1st wife Pauline Hodges, 3 brothers, Clarence, John and Chub and a sister, Lydia Terrie.
