Ruth "Virginia" Jones

Ruth Virginia Jones “Virginia” born March 10, 1924 to William and Ruth (Helming) Abernathey peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family at the age of 101, after a life well lived and well loved.

A 1941 graduate of Souris High School in Souris, North Dakota she was a star basketball player among her graduating class of 8 girls. Virginia was a huge sports fan, she loved basketball, baseball, Nascar and for years never missed a Big 12 Tournament. She moved to Missouri after high school, married and had 2 children.

Virginia was a Beautician in the Independence area for over 50 years, she enjoyed traveling, bowling, dancing, and was an avid mushroom hunter, who started the season in Southern Missouri and followed the mushroom hunting to Iowa. She leaves behind a legacy of joy, curiosity and the reminder that age is just a number if you’re having a good time.

Virginia is survived by her daughter Irene Johnson of Kansas City, son Larry Allen of Kansas City, brother Donald (Millie) Abernathey, half-sister Patrica (Sonny) Hanson, step sister Margaret Undlin, sister in law Roma Abernathey, grandchildren Cindy (Ron) Long, Klint Allen, great grandchildren Krystal (Shawn) Hughes, Hannah Meese, Dylan Long, great great grandchildren Tessa, Kinsley, Landen, Greyson, Huntley, Braxtin and Oaklee.

She is proceeded in death by her father and stepmother, William and Ester Abernathey, mother and step father Ruth and Lester Convis, brothers, Norman (Gladys) Abernathey, Eugene Abernathey, Duane Abernathey and Robert Abernathey, half-brothers Larry, Doug and David Abernathey, step brother in law Lloyd Undlin and special friend Henry Luther of Buckner.
