Jack O. Sanders, 86, longtime resident of Independence, MO, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at Kansas City Hospice House after a brief illness. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 pm, Sunday, September 28, at Carson-Speaks Chapel in Independence (816) 252-7900. The Rosary will start at 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am, Monday, September 29, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Independence. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House.
Born Jackson Orrbry Sanders, April 28, 1922, in Ruston, LA to William and Fannie Belle Sanders, he attended Byrd High School in Shreveport, LA and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the outset of World War II. He married Rosalind Kleck October 27, 1945 and was Honorably Discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1946 and a promotion upon discharge to Second Lieutenant in 1949. He worked for the Kansas City Southern Railway for over 45 years including over 30 years as the Assistant to the General Manager and Vice President. Concurrently, he was a respected professional portrait photographer in the Independence area. He was very active in the American Legion Post 21 in Independence serving as Post Commander as well as Fifth District Americanism Chairman and Commander, State Adjutant and member of Forty & Eight. He pursued a professional singing career in Hollywood as a child and has been active in music and singing groups his entire life. He was an active member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Independence for over 50 years serving in several capacities including soloist and assistant director of the church choir.
He had been married to Rosalind for over 60 years when she passed in December 2005. He is survived by three sons, Michael of Lenexa, KS, Stephen of Parsippany, NJ and William of Kansas City, MO. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Natalie Elder, Sabrina Orrison, Jason Sanders, Corey Sanders, TeAudra Sanders, McKenna Sanders, and Ellaina Sanders and two great-grandchildren, Emily and Ryan Elder.
Husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Jack will be greatly missed by all of his loving family and friends.
