Thurston Schoff

August 11, 1913 — February 16, 2010

Thurston R. Schoff, 96 years old, ended his long and successful life on Tuesday, Feb.16, 2010, at The Groves in Independence. Services will be 10 am, Sat., Feb. 20, 2010 at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052; interment at Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 – 7:30 pm, Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Walnut Park Community of Christ Build for Peace Fund or The Groves Hospice.
Thurston was born in Hamilton, MO, the son of Richard and Mary Schoff. He graduated from Hamilton High School and completed courses at Central Business College in Kansas City, MO.
He served his country as a T-4 Sergeant and was Col. A.E. Kastner’s personal secretary in the 13th Armored Division of the U.S. Army during WW II. He married the love of his life, Olive Peterson on Jan. 9, 1944. After the war ended they lived in Independence and raised their children in the home that Thurston, his dad and brother built on S. Dodgion Street. Thurston retired in Jan. 1976 from Western Weighing and Inspection Bureau as supervisor in the traffic department after thirty-seven years of service. He had been financial secretary and treasurer of the Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks for sixteen years.
Thurston was an active member of the New Walnut Park Community of Christ, where he served as an elder for forty-nine years and was a Group Pastor for seventeen years. Music played an important part in his life. He sang in the Adult Choir and in numerous quartets.
He was a master gardener of fruits, vegetables and flowers. After retirement, Olive and he enjoyed spending their winters in Weslaco, TX for twenty-one years. They called Heritage House home for twenty-three years before moving to The Groves in 2008.
Thurston was preceded in death by his sister, Gertrude Conner and his brother, Russell Schoff. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Olive Schoff; daughter Cynthia Schnell and husband Kenneth; son Kenneth Schoff and wife Cheryl; grandchildren Barbara Galbraith and husband Joseph; Michael Willoughby; Jason Schoff and wife Megan; Stephen Schnell; and Jennifer Buckley and husband Scott; seven great-grandchildren: Madeleine, Sophia and Austin Galbraith; Morgan and Savannah Schnell; Declan Schoff and Emma Buckley.
