Virginia Bean Schrunk, 90, Independence, MO passed away March 3, 2009. Services will be 10 am, Friday at Carson-Speaks Chapel with visitation beginning one hour prior to service time. A committal service will be at 2 pm, Friday at St. Joseph Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to The Groves, the Community of Christ Temple Endowment Fund or Outreach International.
Virginia Bean Schrunk was born Sept. 29, 1918 in Avenue City, MO to James E. and Clara Kelly. As a young lady she became a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now Community of Christ) where she spent many years of service. She gave credit to the church for being the vehicle through which she learned of God and received life’s blessings.
She attended Eureka Elementary and Castle High School in the Avenue City, MO area, then Central High School in St. Joseph, MO. She then earned a Bachelor of Education from Northwest Mo. State University and a Masters from Colorado State. After teaching for a short time she married Lawrence Bean who was tragically killed in a car train accident after only a year of marriage. Her teaching career lasted for 30 years after which she married Francis Schrunk.
Virginia is survived by a nephew, Robert Kelly of Tampa, FL, a great niece Karen Schwab and husband Tom and their daughters Tawnya, Laura and Sara all of Texas. One step-son, Don Schrunk and wife Pat of Oklahoma and sons David of Oklahoma City, OK, Stephen of Lincoln, NE and Brian and wife Lani of Los Angeles, CA and a host of Schrunk nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Francis and step-son Tom, whose widow Sharon and son Ryan live in Omaha, his former wife Pat and husband Gary Dunlap and their three children Lori, Michael, and Jennifer who live in the Kansas City and St. Louis areas
