Mary Pat Schwietz, 74, Independence, MO passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011.
Mary Pat was born July 4, 1937, the daughter of Edward and Marie (Foster) Watson. She grew up at Cedarcrest Dairy, where she loved exploring the fields and hated washing milk bottles. After high school, she joined the Sisters of Mercy and was a Catholic nun for 15 years. After leaving the religious life, she taught 7th grade math at Bridger Junior High and Bingham Middle School. Mary Pat was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she played the organ at mass while her husband led the choir.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Brady; brother, Robert Watson; and her parents.
Survivors include her loving husband Norman of nearly 40 years; daughter, Rebecca Schwietz and her husband Andrew Van Der Laan; grandchildren, Henry and Ruth Van Der Laan; sister, Rita Lamb; brother, Ed Watson and her beloved cats, Buzie, Cece, and Amelie.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church; 600 N. Liberty St., Independence, MO. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2011 with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Mary’s Parish or the Mid America Alzheimer’s Association.
