Charles Walter “Mike” Self, 92 of Independence, MO passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Blue Springs. Services were held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, January 3, 2011 at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will follow in Mt. Washington Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10:30 until service time Monday at the chapel. Donations may be made to Holt International Adoption Services. Charles was born July 9, 1918 in Spiro, OK to Walter C. and Sadie (Holdridge) Self. He grew up in the Kansas City area and graduated from Northeast High School in 1936. He proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Corp during WWII where he was a tail gunner and waist gunner. He worked in the accounting department at American Oil Company for 30 years. He later worked as a Federal Police Officer for the Kansas City Courthouse, the Truman Library and later was an immigration officer. He enjoyed all animals especially dogs and horses and was a gunsmith. He was a member and Elder of the Beacon Heights Community of Christ. He belonged to the Independence Saddle Club and rode in the American Royal, and a member of the American Legion Post #21 in Independence, MO. He was married to Dorothy L. Hawkins on December 2, 1945, she survives of the home. Other survivors include; a daughter, Linda Lloyd and her husband Frank of Blue Springs, MO; 4 grandchildren, Kelly Black and her husband Matt of Lee’s Summit, MO, Korey Lloyd and his wife Heather of Blue Springs, MO, Mindy Kruse and her husband Brian of Lincoln, NE and David Lloyd of Kansas City, MO; 4 great grandchildren, Jonas, Rachel, William and Brady; 3 sisters, Lula Hopper of Independence, MO, Helen Shearer of Laurie, MO and Betty Jackson of Lenexa, KS and many nieces, nephews and friends.
