George "Sonnie" W. Sharrar, 93, of Independence, MO passed away peacefully December 25, 2007 at Rosewood Health Center. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., with a visitation to follow on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Groves Chapel, 1515 W. White Oak, Independence, MO. George was born October 2, 1914 in Davenport, Iowa to George M. and Elizabeth Sharrar. He made his life’s work with wood; first as a successful patternmaker with his own business in Moline, IL, from 1934 to 1980; then, in his retirement, as an accomplished, published and award winning wood-turner specializing in pieced and inlaid bowls that can be seen around the world. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church and served many faithful years as a Deacon. His woodworking skills were put to good use during the building of the Church’s Temple in Independence, when he built a scale model of the building for people to see during its construction. He also designed and made the patterns for the doves used for the door pulls. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Sharrar; two daughters, Patricia Courtney of Independence and Mary (Craig) Hunter of Libertyville, IL; two sisters, Rita Youngquist of Sonoma, CA, and Marie Wheelock of East Moline, IL; one brother, Joe Sharrar of Moline, IL; four grandchildren, Clay (Heidi) Courtney, Bryan (Kacey) Courtney, Brandon (Christy) Hunter and Kristan Hunter; and three great-granddaughters, Allison Courtney, Emerson and Quinlyn Hunter.
