Charles Edward Shaw, 78, of Independence, MO passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at Centerpoint Medical Center. Charles was born December 13, 1931 to Ralph Phillip Shaw and Hilda Elizabeth Wathen Shaw at Pattonsburg, MO. Charles grew up in Daviess County and graduated from Coffey High School in 1950. He then moved to Independence. Charles was employed at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, MO. He was the facilities engineering drafting supervisor and retired March 31, 1993 with 42 years of service. He was a charter member of the Lake City 25 Year Club and served as the club President in 2007. Charles served in the U.S. Army with the 532 Engineers Amphibious Support Regiment in Japan and Korea during 1952-54. Charles was an Eagle Scout and a Hard-Way-Warrior in the Mic-O-Say. His scouting service of over 20 years included 3 years as Scoutmaster of Troop 278 and 3 years as Executive Officer of Troop 121. 21 Eagle badges were awarded during his years as Scoutmaster. Charles is a member of the First Methodist Church of Independence. He is a Gold Card Member of the American Legion Post 21, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1738 and a member of the Korean Veterans Association Chapter 2. Charles was a charter member of the Independence Schools Vocational Advisory Committee and chaired the committee in 1983-84. He also was a judge in the drafting division in the district industrial arts contests. Charles was married to Dorothy Marie McMillen on November 25, 1956 at Kidder, MO. From this union, a son, Michael Edward, and a daughter, Linda Marie, were born. Charles has four granddaughters: Kristen and Addie Shaw and Ariel and Zoe Vandiver. Charles was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy; his parents; and a sister, Nedra Jean Peugh. He is survived by his children, granddaughters, and a sister Juanita Catherine Holcomb.
Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Sunday, May 2 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence. Services will be at 10:00 AM Monday at the Chapel. Graveside services at 2:00 PM Monday at Coffey Cemetery in Coffey, MO with military honors provided by VFW Post 1738. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the VFW Post 1738 Honor Guard c/o Max Henderson.
