Cletis, Harold Shelley, 87, of Independence, MO, passed away, Tuesday morning at Carmel Hills Living Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 22, 2009 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday at the Antioch Cemetery in Pittsburg, MO. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday evening at the chapel. Donations may be made to Crossroads Hospice or to the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Independence. Cletis was born February 21, 1922 in Kansas City, MO to Harold and Alta (Williams) Shelley. He worked for over 30 years for the GM Plant in Kansas City until he retired in 1982. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, traveling and was an avid reader. He belonged to the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Independence and the United Autoworkers Union in Kansas City. He served in the Coast Guard during WWII from 1941-45. Cletis married Emma J. (Silva) on February 26, 1942; she passed away on July 19, 1990. He later married Mary Zoe Smith (Hammontree) on March 16, 1991, she survives of the home. Other survivors include; 2 daughters, Linda Smith and husband Lynn of Omaha, NE and Patti Ash and husband James of Fithian, IL; 2 sons, Gary Shelley and wife Deborah of Las Vegas, NV and Charles Shelley and wife Joy of Port St. Lucie, FL; a step daughter, Barbara Smith of Independence, MO; 8 grandchildren, Tina, John, Jolinda, Jennifer, Bryan, Kelley, Casey and Tony; 13 great grandchildren; his aunt, Burla Lilley of Independence, MO and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Shelley and a brother, Clifford Shelley.
