Celia Sherman

June 22, 1934 — November 6, 2008

Celia Sherman, 74, of Independence, MO passed away November 6, 2008 at St. Luke’s East. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the Walnut Gardens Community of Christ Congregation. Celia was born June 22, 1934. Celia graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1952. She took second place in national forensic association (extemporaneous speaking competition); and met President Truman in White House Ceremony as part of her recognition. She went on to graduate from Graceland College, class of 1954 and attended CMSU. She was a Owner and Operator of Sherman’s Odd’s and Endtiques on the Independence Square from 1979-1999. She was actively involved in the Independence Square Association. Along with her husband Jerry, Celia traveled extensively to many national and international volleyball tournaments, while Jerry served in various leadership roles, including President of USA Volleyball. She was actively involved for years in Community of Christ Youth Camps, including Spectacular, the largest youth gathering in the Community of Christ, where husband Jerry served as one of the original directors. Celia’s passions included her husband Jerry, whom she supported in his passions for leadership in volleyball, Community of Christ Youth Camps, and in his career as pilot for TWA. Second to Jerry were her children, who she always put before her own needs, Whether it was carting 5 kids back forth to ball practice, helping them with homework, or guiding them into adulthood, Mom provided for her children. And later in life, she loved providing the same loving and caring concern for her grandchildren- through babysitting, reading to them, attending their school activities and sporting events. She was always there. Also had a passion for collectibles- most notably her over 500 Santa Clauses and her Cobalt Blue Glassware. Celia was preceded in death by her parents, Evan and Dorothy Fry (Evan served as RLDS Radio Minister, author and hymnist). Son, Mark; and sister Margaret Ann Edmunds. Survivors include husband, Jerry (married for 54 years); son, Brian and his wife Kelly; son, Craig and his wife Robin; son, Stuart; daughter Jill; daughter, Melissa Sanders and her husband Chris; sister Evelyn Mesley; grandchildren Sterling, Kyle, Eli, Wyatt, Dylan, Lukas and Morgan; numerous cousins and countless friends.
