Maxine Roper Sherman, 94, Independence, MO passed away July 16, 2009. Services will be 10 am, Monday, July 20, 2009 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; interment at Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Maxine was born June 15, 1915 in Chicago, IL but grew up in Independence, MO. She graduated from William Jewell College and was a member of Community of Christ Stone Church. Maxine was selected by Mr. Braniff personally to become the first Chief Hostess for Braniff Airways. During that time she met and married her husband Mont Owen Roper, who was a pilot. They lived in various cities around the country before settling in El Paso, TX. Following Mont’s death, she returned to Independence and eventually married Dr. Frederick Sherman. Maxine enjoyed playing Bridge and she and Fred were members of the ballroom dancing group at The Fountains.
Maxine was preceded in death by husbands Mont Owen Roper in March 1993 and Dr. Frederick Sherman in Dec., 2007 and brother Marion Keir. She is survived by sons Mont K. Roper and wife Lareda Cadieux, Tulsa, OK; Michael O. Roper, Tucson, AZ; sister Dorothy M. Brand, Independence, MO; step-daughters Sue Treffeisen, FL; Martha Sherman, Tampa, FL; Sally Friedman, Pittsburgh, PA; and niece Mary Ann Benson, Independence, MO.
