Shirley J. Hix, 95, of Sugar Creek, Mo., passed away June 30, 2026. Visitation will be from 6 to 8p.m. on Sunday July 12th at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, Mo., 64052. Graveside service and Interment at Mound Grove Cemetery Independence, Mo., 10a.m. Monday July 13th.
Shirley was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Marshall Mo. She moved with her family to Independence to start her freshman year at Northeast High School. Upon Graduating from Northeast, she met and then married the love of her life John W. Hix of Sugar Creek in 1956. They were married for sixty-one years until his passing in 2018.
She worked as an office manager for LaFarge Cement Co. in Sugar Creek, retiring in 1996. She was a long-time member of the Sugar Creek United Methodist Church where she played the organ and piano.
She enjoyed planning and attending holiday and birthday celebrations for her family and friends. Her smile and sense of humor was always present. She looked forward to trips down to Pomme de Terre lake, especially in the fall. She relaxed by reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching game shows and the Royals. She loved and was very proud of her grandchildren and was always interested in what they were doing. She always supported their sports activities.
When someone was hurting, she would say, “Everything is going to be okay.” Even though we are hurting now and our hearts are broken, we can remember her saying this and find some comfort. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. The Hix family would like to thank the staff of HCA Hospice for the compassion and care she has received over the last four months.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband John W. Hix, brother John W. Erickson and grandson Corey Richardson.
She is survived by son John F. Hix Blue Springs, Mo., and daughter Mendy Hix Navarre, Fl. Grandchildren, Kyle Richardson and wife, Jessica Liberty Hill, Tx., Garrett Wendel, Sugar Creek, Mo., Tanner Wendel, Sugar Creek, Mo., John W.
