Shirley Ann Phelps, a beloved member of the Independence community, passed away on October 27, 2025, at the age of 85. Born August 16,1940, in Independence, Missouri, Shirley dedicated her life to service, family, and the Lord.
Shirley’s professional journey began with her administrative work at the Community of Christ RLDS Church, where she spent most of her career until her well-deserved retirement. It was at this church that she met her husband, Bruce, with whom she shared an incredible 58 years of marriage.
After graduating from Raytown High School, Shirley furthered her education at Graceland College. Her thirst for learning was matched by her passion for nurturing those around her. Her kindness and selflessness were a hallmark of her personality. She was deeply involved in her children’s lives as they grew up, whether it was serving as a skylark leader for her daughter or participating on the Boy Scout committee for her son. She was also a devoted room mom, ensuring her presence was felt in every aspect of her children’s schooling and experiences. Shirley loved her family fiercely and was always present to support her grandchildren as well at most of their sporting events and activities.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Shirley was known for her many hobbies and interests. An avid crocheter and talented baker, she earned a special place in the hearts of many, particularly with her famous pies. The joy of baking was not just a solitary endeavor for her; it was something she enjoyed sharing with her granddaughter, Rachel, teaching her the art of baking and creating lasting memories together. For over twenty years, Shirley took great pride in leading the fall festival at New Hope Church, where she sold her scrumptious pies to help raise money for church activities, further illustrating her dedication to her community.
Shirley Ann Phelps will be missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love, service, and kindness will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
Shirley is survived by her son, David Phelps (Terri); daughter, Becky White (Eddie); grandchildren, Ben White (Alicia), Jonny White, Mitchell White, Andy Phelps (Caroline), Rachel Phelps and Brandon Green; great-grandchildren, JD White, Darcy White, Teddy Phelps and Violet Phelps; brother, Richard Johnson and numerous “bonus” family members.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bruce and her parents, Ralph and Edna (Larson) Johnson.
A visitation will be held in her honor on November 8, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service starting at 10:00 AM at the New Hope Community of Christ, located at 220 W Moore St, Independence, MO 64050.
