Walter Shirley, 97, Independence, MO; passed away February 1, 2011.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Graveside services will be at 3:00 PM Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Crown Hill Cemetery, Sedalia, MO.
Walt was born July 25, 1913 to Elmer and Margaret Shirley in Prairie Home, MO. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1943. Walt married Lucille Bradley in 1943 and enjoyed 68 years of marriage until his death. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration, where he was a flight services controller in the Southwestern states and California. Walt and Lucille made California their home and resided in San Pedro and Hemet until 2009. He was a past president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Southern California Chapter. He was an active Ham Radio Operator and he and Lucille supported the California Red Cross during times of need. Walt taught first aid classes for the Red Cross and loved to keep current with all the newest technology. He was a member of the American Legion, the 40&8 and the Elks Club.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Paul E. Shirley.
He is survived by his loving wife Lucille of the home, daughter Dorothy Logan, Lee’s Summit, MO; son, Wesley Shirley and his wife Joy, Sedalia MO; grandchildren; Laura Logan, Shannon Krahenbuhl and husband Tom, Myra Wooderson and husband Dale, Kyla Stoltz and husband Rob and Linda Shirley; 7 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter as well as nieces and nephews.
