Jewel L. Short, 81, of Independence, MO passed away June 13, 2011. A visitation will take place from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. A chapel service will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the chapel. Graveside services at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at New Hope Cemetery in Liberty, MO. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Jewel was born February 11, 1930 in Salem, AR to Elmer and Lois (Caruthers) Short. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving four years during the Korean War. He was a member of Maywood Baptist Church. Jewel was a member of the UAW Local 93, retiring in 1989 from the General Motors Leeds Plant after 30 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 21, and Past Master of Independence #76 Masonic Lodge. Jewel was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jim, Lowell and Mack Short; two sisters, Hazel Turner and Doris Valdepena. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sarah (Massey) Short; son, Kenneth Short and wife Donna of Independence, MO; daughter, Sharon Mitchell and husband Kenneth of Leawood, KS; one grandson, Timothy Mitchell of Leawood, KS; two brothers, Tom Short and wife Ruby, John Short; one sister, Vera Bullard; and several nieces and nephews.
