Jugertha "Marvin" Shuler, 91, of Independence, died peacefully on March 6, 2011, surrounded by family and a close friend remembering together his long life and his abiding love. Marvin was born December 28, 1919, in Owaneco, Illinois, to Jasper and Ethel Shuler. While growing up in Independence, Marvin enjoyed playing baseball, and he played competitively in the cow pastures of several Missouri towns. Marvin graduated from Wm. Chrisman High School and continued his education in St. Louis, MO, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Engineering. On December 2, 1941, he was inducted into the Army at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. As an honest and faithful member of the Greatest Generation, he served with the HQ 22nd Armored Engineering Battalion in the European Theatre. Staff Sergeant Shuler saw active duty in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe. For his bravery and meritorious service in these campaigns, he was awarded five Bronze Stars. In addition, he received a Good Conduct Medal and a Distinguished Unit Badge from HQ7th CORPS on March 14, 1945. He returned to the United States in October of 1945 where he was Honorably Discharged. One month after his discharge, he married his longtime sweetheart, Carol Binger. Marvin worked as a draftsman for the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church, and he was a long-term volunteer for the Laurel Club in Independence. Marvin is survived by his wife, Carol, one brother, Donald Lee Shuler and his wife Betty of Lake Jackson, Texas, his son, James Marvin Shuler and wife Donna Sue of Independence, and daughter, Donna L. Shuler of Independence. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper and Ethel Shuler, and a granddaughter, Lisa Durrell. Also grieving his death are two grandsons, Jim Durrell and wife LueAnne of Grain Valley, MO, Jason Durrell and wife Connie of Blue Springs, MO, and three great grandchildren, Brandon Durrell, Jordan Durrell, and Tori Durrell. He will be remembered as a beloved and quiet man who served his country well and steadfastly loved his family and his granddogs. In November of 2011, he and Carol would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary as devoted husband and wife. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington, Independence, MO 64052. Interment will follow in Mound Grove Cemetery on North River Blvd. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, March 11, 2011, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Luke’s Kidney Transplant Program, 4225 Baltimore, KC, MO 64111, or American Diabetes Association.
