Edith Maxine (Loftis) Slayton Kelly Miller, 81, Independence, MO passed away peacefully at her home on Feb 4, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, Feb 10, 2010 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055. Cremation with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date.
Maxine was born Oct. 15, 1929 to Wm. P. “Billy” Loftis and Eliza Rachel (Ludwig) Loftis in Romance, MO. She was married to Bernard D. Slayton for twenty-two and a half years; James B. Kelly for twenty years and Robert A. Miller for seven years. Maxine spent most of her life in Independence and was a very active lady. She was in PTA for her children and the VFW Fraas-Fain Post 1000 where she had been an Auxiliary President. She had also been active at American Legion Post 21. She enjoyed working with people and spent many hours as a volunteer at the Kansas City Veterans Medical Center. She loved bluegrass and country & western music and would attend festivals. Most recently she attended concerts at Country Meadow Baptist Church. She was a big fan of Harry & Bess Truman and for many years laid roses at their burial sites at the Truman Library in May.
Maxine was preceded in death by her ex-husband Bernard, siblings Esther Pearl Loftis Welch, Clinton Loftis, Clyde Loftis and Sue Warden. She is survived by daughter Teresa G. (Slayton) Curl; son Eric D. Slayton; granddaughter Stephanie R Curl and great-granddaughter, Sasha N. Curl all of Independence, MO; brother Everett Loftis, Gainsville, MO and sister Earlene West, Springfield, MO.
