Fred “Freddie” Slocum, 80, of Independence, Mo passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013 after a hard fought 3 year battle with illness. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be dearly missed by us all. Fred was born on August 8, 1932 in Kansas City, Mo. He graduated from Kansas City East High School where he excelled in track and field. After secretly trying to enlist in the Marines, he was eventually drafted into the Army where he served in the Korean War. After returning from Korea he followed the family business as a plumber eventually retiring in 1999 from the Kansas City Star. While working on a job at the old Jones store in KC, MO, he met Carol, the love of his life. They were married on November 9, 1957, and they remained married for 55 years until the time of his death. He spent his retirement years hopping in his truck and traveling, going to the lake and spending as much time as he could with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his mother Isabelle Best Slocum; father Fred Adam Slocum; Sister Geraldine Slocum Gillette; and step mother Elouise Blau Slocum. He is survived by wife Carol; children Joe (Debbie) of Independence, MO, Mark (Anna) of Shawnee, KS, Darren (Darla) of Grain Valley, MO, Shawn (David) of Kansas City, MO, and Scott (Jana) of Buckner, MO; sisters Jeanne (Bernard) Versue of St. Joseph, MO and Kathy (Dale) Kissell of St. Joseph, MO; 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055. Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5th at Mt Olivet Cemetery in Raytown, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Village Hospice.
