Anan James Smith, 29, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 at The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS, after a short battle with Leukemia. Anan’s Last Song Memorial Service will be 7:00 pm Monday, October 15th, 2012 at Stone Church Community of Christ; 1012 W Lexington Ave. Independence, MO 64050. Root beer floats reception to follow. Anan was born February 10th, 1983 in Independence, MO to Steven Lynn and Cindy Lee (Jensen) Smith. Anan deeply loved music, opera and drama. He traveled to many places in the world on choir tours. He studied at Simpson College in Indianola, IA and Graceland University in Lamoni, IA, where he was a student at the time of his death. He led a Boy Scout troop for underprivileged youth, was a substitute teacher, among other jobs, and lived his concern for others. Antique books, restoring pianos, fossils, fine food, root beer and a 1950 Dodge Coronet were among his passions. Larger than life, he will be remembered for his laugh and contagious optimistic spirit. He is survived by his mother, Cindy (Jensen) Smith of Independence, MO; father Steven Smith and wife Elaina of Lamoni, IA; sister Thiera of Chicago, IL, and brothers Keston of Brooklyn, NY and Thoric (wife Sarah) of Independence, MO; grandfather Gaylord Jensen of Overland Park, KS; aunt Jill and Darren Chadwick of Overland Park, KS; uncle Alan and Valle Smith of Mount Ayr, IA; uncle Ron and Di Smith of Lamoni, IA; aunt Karen and David Bates of Independence, MO, and uncle Doug and Judi Smith of Odessa, MO; many cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.
