Gordon Smith

July 14, 1926 — September 16, 2011

Gordon Wilburn “Smitty” Smith, 85, of Independence, MO, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed on to join his Heavenly Father on Sept. 16, 2011. Services will be 10 am, Wed. Sept. 21, 2011 at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave, Independence, MO 64052; interment at Mt. Washington Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Grain Valley Eagles Football or Wrestling Boosters Clubs, P.O. Box 304, Attn: GVHS, Grain Valley, MO 64029.
Smitty was born July 14, 1926 in Kansas City, MO. He attended Northeast High School before joining the Navy during WW II. He re-enlisted and also fought in the Korean War. He worked at Armco Steel Company for over forty years as a machinist. He was a member of Rockwood Baptist Church for over fifty-three years, a member of the Grain Valley Eagles Football & Wrestling Booster Clubs, PT Boaters Inc. of WW II, The Maywood Jolly Lamplighters and the tribe of Mic-O-Say.
Smitty was preceded in death by son Robert John Smith. He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years Dorothy (Hedger) Smith, of the home; sons Wayne W. Smith and wife Janice; Dennis Smith and wife Cecilia; daughter Brenda Sodano and husband Scot, all of Grain Valley, MO; grandchildren Robin Smith Trask, Keith Smith Upham, Tim Smith, Janette Smith Drader, Jeffrey Smith, Angela Kainer, Jason Smith Glass, Levi Miller, Robert Scot Sodano, Bradley Michael Sodano, Joseph Gordon Sodano and fourteen great-grandchildren.
