Helen Louise Smittle, 84, of Independence, MO passed away Monday, October 13, 2008 at the Villages of Jackson Creek. Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday, October 17, 2008 at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church of Independence, MO or the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe. Helen was born September 1, 1924 in Asbury, MO to Chester Edward and Maude Ethel (Martin) Purcell. She attended Carl Junction High School before marrying the love of her life, Robert F. Smittle on September 15, 1942. They eventually relocated from Jasper County after WWII to Independence, MO. Helen’s life evolved around her husband and family. The Smittles enjoyed ballroom dancing, going to the lake, and wintering in Texas. Helen is survived by her daughter Sandra McGinnis and husband Wally of Chillicothe, MO; son Mike Smittle and wife Lonna of Independence, MO; grandchildren Cassandra and Lee Rashman, Carrie Cooper, Jarrod and Gretchen McGinnis; great-grandchildren Corinne Louise Rashman, Jackson Cooper, Ingrid, Millicent and Sybil McGinnis; sister-in-law Bonnie Purcell; and by a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends. Mrs. Smittle was preceded in death by her husband Robert “Bob” Smittle in ’98; and by five brothers and two sisters.
