Bertha A. Steck, 99, Independence, MO, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009 at the Groves.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Friday, March 27, 2009 at the Community Room at the Groves. Private family burial will be at Mound Grove Cemetery. Because of her long association with the Groves, in lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Groves Endowment Fund in her name.
Bertha was born July 27, 1909 in Jasper City, MO the daughter of Ira Earnest and Lillie Belle (Sanford) Bray. She attended school in Warrensburg, MO. She lived in the Kansas City and Independence area where she resided for over 50 years. She was employed with Herald Publishing House, and secretary in the Office of the First Presidency at the Community of Christ World Headquarters and later the Office of the Evangelist. Bertha was a life long member of the Community of Christ Church and attended the Stone Church Congregation and recently the Grove Congregation. She had volunteered with the Groves Auxiliary where she was a charter resident and the Independence Regional Hospital Auxiliary, she was also involved with the Graceland Mother’s Club. Bertha enjoyed traveling, and reading.
She was preceded in death by her husband F. Jerome Steck in 1959; daughter Joanne Steck Baker; sisters, Elsie Harper, Laura Miller and Addie Marsh; and brother, Roy Bray.
She is survived by her niece Carole (Miller) Zelk of Independence; grandsons, Joel Baker and Jonathan Baker; 7 nephews; Robert Miller, James Miller, Leland Marsh, Kenneth Marsh, Donald Marsh, Dale Marsh and Glen Marsh. Former son in law Tom Baker
