Stephen Raymond "Uncle Go Go" Kunkel, a man whose presence illuminated every room he entered with warmth, humor, and an unmistakable zest for life, passed away on June 15, 2026, in Independence, Missouri. Born on February 26, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, Stephen lived a life deeply enriched by his unwavering dedication to family, his country, and the simple joys that brought him peace.

Stephen's journey was marked by remarkable service and steadfast commitment. He honorably served as a helicopter repair technician in the United States Air Force, with deployments in the Philippines and Thailand among other locations. This period of his life not only demonstrated his technical expertise but also his resilience and ability to face challenges head-on—a trait reflected throughout his life.

Following his military career, Stephen devoted himself to his professional pursuits. He worked in the steel business with his brother in law Bob Kapus and other employers in the steel and railroad before settling at Chemtron, where he worked diligently in purchasing and management for a railroad repair company. His sharp mind and steady leadership earned him the respect of his colleagues and the satisfaction of meaningful work, laying down a legacy of reliability and integrity. It was during his time at Chemtron that he met the love of his life Barb Spencer while in Alabama. They fell in love and moved north to Valparaiso where they married on September 3, 1991. Their journey continued together to their first home in Independence.... Kentucky. Their next move was to their final and ultimate home Independence Missouri. Steve and Barb bought their home in 1998 from their neighbor Dana Callahan. They not only got a home, but a steadfast best friend. In addition to Dana, their other dear friend was Alan Ensign who along with Dana helped them throw down true roots.

Known affectionately as "Uncle Go Go," Stephen brought joy and laughter to his family and friends with a sharp, quick-witted sense of humor that served as a gentle balm in challenging times. His greatest pleasure was found in the simple, heartfelt moments spent with those he loved—whether engaging in spirited conversations, sharing stories, or simply appreciating each other's company. His passions extended to cheering on his favorite sports teams, the Bears and Chiefs football, reveling in NASCAR races, tending to his garden, and the affectionate companionship of his cherished cat, Three (Garfield).

Stephen's family was the heart of his existence. Though he mourned the passing of his beloved wife, Barbara Kunkel, his parents Raymond and Ann Kunkel, and his sisters Patsy Kapus and Carol Maday, he continued to nurture the bonds with those who remain. He is lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews: David (Jennifer) Maday, Deanne (Phil) Athans, Debbie (Tom) Wheetley, Chris Kapus, Ken (Bea) Kapus, Kathy (Steve) Palek, Karen (Martin) Brady-Hewlett, Kelly (Daryl) Blasy, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews and dear friends who held him in their hearts.

A celebration of Stephen's life will be held on June 27, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at 17900 Hidden Valley Rd, Independence, Missouri. This gathering will be a testament to his vibrant spirit, where friends and family will share memories and honor the profound impact he had on their lives.
