J. Glen Stewart, 88, Independence, MO, died Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at the Lee’s Summit Medical Center. Services will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, March 1, at Speaks Suburban Chapel; burial in Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7:00 pm on Friday at the Chapel and the family will also receive friends for an hour prior to the service on Saturday. Contributions are suggested to the Community of Christ Temple Endowment Fund. Mr. Stewart was born in Council Bluffs, IA, to Moroni and Hazel Stewart. He married Helen Bolt in 1941 and they have been together for 67 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Glen worked as a pattern maker and owned his own shop for many years. He was an ordained minister with the Community of Christ for over fifty years and had served as pastor twice at Second Church, and once at the Mt. Washington congregation. He belonged to Rotary Club, enjoyed shooting pool with his friends at Heritage House, and fishing. He was known affectionately as “Poppy” to his grandchildren. Glen was preceded in death by his daughter, Janice, as well as his parents. He is survived by his wife, Helen Stewart, of the home; their daughter, Sharon Barackman and her husband Bruce, of Annapolis, MD; their son, Chuck Stewart (formerly of Independence) of Glen Burnie, MD; 4 grandchildren, Chris Stewart, Holly Hesse, Kim McFate, and Brian Betts; 8 great-grandchildren; his brother Bob Stewart and wife Mavis, of Pawley’s Island, S.C; two brothers-in-law, Darrell Bolt and wife Parealee, and Leonard Hitchcock, all of Independence; and other loving relatives and friends.
