(Sister Mary Vincent)
Born: January 5, 1929, Higginsville, MO
Professed: August 13, 1937, Nevada, MO
Died: June 23, 2010, Blue Springs, MO
Sister Mary Ellen lived a life of prayer and work as a Sister of St. Francis of the Holy Eucharist. She entered the convent while a student at St. Francis Academy in Nevada taking the name Sister Mary Vincent. Throughout her 62 years in religious life sister lovingly cared for the physical needs of the orphans, Academy girls and sisters at St. Francis as cook or infirmarian for 15 years. Thirteen years as cook at St. John’s Seminary increased her esteem for the priesthood making her a “mother” to hundreds of young men seeking God’s will in their lives. As a follower of St. Francis Sister possessed the gifts of joy, gratitude and also begging through which she provided food for the soul as well as for the table. In the late seventies sister began a new career working as a CNA at St. Mary’s and later at St. Joseph’s Hospital where in 1991 she was selected Employee of the Year. Upon retirement Sister became the House Manager for the Vincentian Fathers in Independence. As her health deteriorated she began yet another ministry at St. Mary’s Manor in Blue Springs. Although a resident Sister spent many hours praying with, listening to and giving advice to residents and staff members about the really important thing in life: Jesus and His love for us. The highlight of her life at the Manor was to sit with residents who were dying, preparing them with the spiritual food necessary for their journey into eternal life as she had prepared so many in her earlier days with physical food for their earthly journey.
Sister is survived by her sisters in community, a sister, Marty Frazier, Columbia, MO, nieces and nephews and numerous spiritual children.
