Margaret Theresa Fitzgerald Surprise, 81, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away on April 6, 2009. Margaret was born in St. Paul, MN on October 27, 1927 to Bernard and Margaret Fitzgerald.
She was a TWA flight attendant before meeting the love of her life, Dr. George Surprise, a long-time dentist in Independence. Margaret and George were married for 58 years and brought five beautiful children into the world. Margaret was a devoted wife and mother and a precious friend to many. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a special joy in her life.
Margaret loved her Irish roots and was a strong, caring, and faithful woman who was a true blessing to all those she met.
Margaret was a volunteer at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Truman Lakewood Hospital, Independence Young Matrons, and other civic organizations. She was an avid bridge player, well-known in all the local circles. Margaret was always on the go, doing for others, traveling with family and friends, and living life to the fullest.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Mary Surprise Hugney, sister, Virginia Cashman, and brother, James Fitzgerald. She is survived by her husband; daughters: Connie (Kris) Kramer, Debbie (Mike) Couch; sons: George B. and Michael J. Surprise; son-in-law, Mike Hugney; seven grandsons; and seven great-granddaughters.
The Funeral Mass will be at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, April 8 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee’s Summit Rd., Independence, MO. A visitation will be held before the Mass from 4:00-7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Roger Maris Cancer Center, c/o Merit-Care Foundation, P.O. Box MC, Fargo, ND 58122-0302, St. Mark’s Catholic Church, or the charity of your choice.
