Stephen Lee Swezey, 61 of Independence, MO, passed away, Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff, AZ. Cremation is planned with private inurnment in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Stephen was born May 15, 1947 in Pittsburg, KS to Charles and Virginia (Davis) Swezey. He was in the first graduating class from Truman High School in 1965. After graduation he proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He had worked as a paralegal for a number of years before working as night auditor for the Marriott Hotel for the past 5 ½ years. He enjoyed wood crafting, landscaping, traveling and animals. He was a member of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church in Independence where he served as church treasurer. He is survived by his loving wife Rochelle (McCafferty) of the home; a daughter, Kelli Lewis of Sugar Creek, MO; 2 sons, Aaron Phillips of Lee’s Summit, MO and Jamie Phillips of Independence, MO; 2 sisters, Marlene Fetter of Kansas City, MO and Mary Long of Arcadia, KS; his step-father, Charles Thomas of Independence and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Charlene Williams in 1980, his father, Charles E. Swezey in 1996 and his mother, Virginia E. Thomas in 2001.
