Floyd Thomas Jr., 86 passed away peacefully at home June 18, 2011.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at New Walnut Park Community of Christ; 1137 S. Pearl, Independence, MO. Burial will be private. A Tribe of Mic-O-Say Service will be at 6:00 PM Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St. Independence, MO with visitation from 6:30-8:00. Memorial contributions are suggested to the New Walnut Park-Building for Peace or Independence Meals on Wheels.

Floyd was born March 17, 1925 to James Floyd and Oleva D. (Cook) Thomas. Floyd was a life-long resident of Independence, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1943, and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri. He enlisted in the Navy Air Corp in 1943 and was called to active duty September 1943. Although he trained to be a naval pilot, World War II ended before he could serve in that capacity. He was honorably discharged June 1947. He married Bonnie (Smart) Thomas December 21, 1947 and had 4 children.

Floyd worked for the Amoco Oil (Standard Oil) Refinery April 1951 – September 1982 when he accepted early retirement when the refinery was closed. Floyd was a charter member of Liberty Street scout troop 233 in 1937. He was the troop’s first Eagle Scout in 1942. He became Scoutmaster of Troop 227 at Walnut Park in 1953 and continued on with various troop and district positions for over 50 years with awards including Silver Beaver, Mic-O-Say and the Paul D. Arend award in 2008.

Floyd has been an active member of Walnut Park Community of Christ congregation since 1953. He was active in Rotary International since 1978. He volunteered many years with Independence Neighborhood Councils, Independence Meals on Wheels, AARP Tax-Aide, and was a volunteer chaplain at Independence Regional Health Center and Centerpoint Hospital for 16 years.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Oleva Thomas, brothers Henry, James, and Jack Thomas, sister Juanita Tignor, and granddaughter Liana Thomas.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bonnie Thomas, son Steve and wife Cindy, daughter Kathleen (Kathy) and husband Vance Snively, daughter Brenda and husband Ralph Ruckman, daughter Marcia and husband Andy Berry, 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
