Independence

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas “Tom” Eugene Kuzila, Sr. on June 3, 2025, in Independence, Missouri. Born on December 21, 1936, in Kansas City, Kansas, Tom graced this world for nearly 89 years, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.

A proud veteran, Tom served as an 82nd Airborne paratrooper in the Army, embodying discipline and bravery, and later served in the Navy Reserves. Tom worked for 37 years in aviation mechanics at TWA before retiring in 1993.

Tom was a devoted family man known for his kind heart and deep love for those around him. His family brought him immense pride and happiness, and he cherished his relationships with his extended family and dear friends who will all miss his warmth, wit and kindness.

Tom's vibrant personality shone through his many interests. He found solace in the simple pleasures of life, like watching trains pass by and basking in the beauty of the river. Travel was a cherished pastime for Tom. He visited California many times and enjoyed crossing the border into Tijuana, Mexico.

A member of St. Mark Catholic Church, Tom carried his faith with him, allowing it to guide his actions. His passing was peaceful as he was surrounded by a circle of love, a reminder of the profound connection he fostered with family and friends. Tom also loved animals, especially dogs. As his nephew Scott Purcell observed, he never met a dog he didn’t like.

Tom was a funny man who liked to make people laugh. Whether he was talking to a stranger, close friend or family member, he had a way of making their day brighter with his humor.

Tom was generous with his time and resources, ready to lend a helping hand when needed.

Tom is survived by his wife of 63 years, Donna Kuzila; son, Jeff (Lisa) Kuzila; granddaughters, Michaela Kuzila, Isabella Hinken and Sophia Hinken; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He is reunited with his departed loved ones, including son, Thomas Eugene Kuzila Jr.; daughter, Nicole Hinken; parents, Andrew and Susan Kuzila; and siblings, Andrew Kuzila Jr., Raymond Kuzila and Mary Ann Brenner. Their memories and shared love remain intertwined with Tom's legacy.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Tom's life with a visitation on June 13, 2025, from 6 PM to 8 PM at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St. in Independence, Missouri. A Mass will be held on June 14, 2025, at 10 AM at St. Mark Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence, followed by a graveside service at New Salem Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Chain of Hope animal rescue or any other charity.

As we bid farewell to a remarkable individual, let us carry on Tom's spirit of kindness, love and devotion to family. His memory will forever reside in our hearts as we honor a life well-lived.
