Barbara Ann Thornton, 61, Independence, MO passed away Jan. 17, 2011.
Barbara was born to Jean (Smith) and Arvin Reiff on Nov. 18, 1949 in Independence, MO and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Truman High School, attended Graceland College and graduated from UMKC in 1976 with a Bachelor degree in sociology. She was baptized at the age of eight into The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, now Community of Christ, and was a Priest. She attended the Cornerstone congregation. She was a dedicated minister who served in various capacities. Barbara was an administrative assistant for Operation Enterprises, Inc. for eighteen years. She served as a long-time volunteer court advocate for Hope House representing victims of domestic abuse. She also was a member of the Mayflower Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Jr. Service League of Independence. She was an artist who worked with oils and enjoyed antiquing in her spare time.
Barbara was preceded in death by her mother Jean H. Reiff in 1997. She is survived by her loving husband of forty-one years Kenneth W. Thornton, of the home; daughters Ashley Thorne and husband Shawn, Kansas City, MO; Allyson Dvorak and husband Brandon, Minneapolis, MN; her father Arvin Reiff and wife Alta, Independence, MO; brothers Steven Reiff and wife Delores, Waterford, CT; Thomas Reiff, his wife Misty and their daughter Kristen, Grain Valley, MO.
Services will be 10 am, Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO; interment at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wed. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Kansas City Hospice House, 9221 Ward Pkwy. Ste. 100, Kansas City, MO 64114-3332.
