Timothy William Rathbun, 65, passed away on October 29, 2025, in Raytown, Missouri. Born on July 25, 1960, in Kansas City, Missouri, Tim lived a life marked by dedication to his work, and deep loyalty to his family and friends.
Tim began his education in the Belton Public School system through the ninth grade before relocating to Florida, where he pursued vocational training. There, he earned his GED and completed studies in auto mechanics and body repair—skills that would serve as a foundation for his lifelong career in technical trades.
In his early adult years, Tim was living and working in Kansas City when he married his second wife, Karen Anderson. During this time, he adopted Karen's two children, Jeremy and Jessica Rathbun. In 1994, Tim moved to Colby, Kansas, where he worked for Commercial Coatings until 1996. It was during this period that he met Amber Zordel, with whom he had four children: Bailey, Brea, Erin, and Otis.
In August of 1996, Tim began what would become a nearly three-decade-long career with Shuttlewagon under John Ying. His commitment and expertise led him through various roles including painter, shop employee, shop manager, and technical advisor. When Shuttlewagon was sold to Nordco in 2008—and later acquired by WabTec in March of 2021—Tim remained a steadfast part of the team. His colleagues knew him as a reliable presence whose knowledge and work ethic left a lasting impression.
Outside of work, Tim found joy in high-octane pursuits and historical reflection. He was an avid fan of Formula One racing and NASCAR and enjoyed building drag racing cars—a testament to both his mechanical skill and love for speed. He also had a deep interest in military history and spent many hours watching old westerns and war movies.
Tim’s legacy lives on through those who knew him best. He is remembered by: the mother of his children - Amber Zordel; his mother - Anita Mutch; his children - Jeremy Rathbun (and daughter-in-law Amber Rathbun), Jessica Rathbun, Bailey Rathbun, Brea Rathbun (and son-in-law Michael Green), Erin Rathbun, and Otis Rathbun; grandchildren Aiden Rathbun, Allie Rathbun, Bradyn Rathbun, and Belle Rathbun; sister Lori Rathbun (and brother-in-law Jody Sweeney); nephew Rick Sullins (great-nephew, Flinn Sullins); niece Shawna Patton (great-nephews Julian Patton and Cassius Patton); nephew Shawn Sweeney (and wife Lauren Sweeney), and many other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his father Joseph Rathbun; sister Bonnie Sullins; and nephew Jeffery Sullins.
Tim will be remembered as loyal, honest, and caring—a man whose presence brought strength to those around him. His memory will continue to bring comfort to his family, friends, and co-workers who were fortunate enough to share in his journey. A Memorial Service will be held on November 15, 2025, from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 East 39th St. S. Independence, MO 64055.
