Virginia was born August 21, 1924 in Kansas City, Kansas to Robert and Maude Gillum.
She attended Rosedale High School and graduated in 1942. In her 20s, she worked at AT&T as a switchboard operator for several years.
She married Homer Dale Spiers on May 29, 1949 and they had 3 kids, Karen, Scott, and Kent.
Virginia had a strong faith and she was an active member of Community of Christ (formerly RLDS) church, and was an ordained elder. She attended the following congregations: Malvern Hill, Odessa TX, Temple City CA, Gudgell Park, The Groves. Her excellent alto bolstered many choir performances.
She had an uncanny knack for uplifting others spirits and making them feel loved!
This special woman was indeed blessed by God to have lived to the age of 101!
Most of the neighbors in Independence remember the scent of home made bread that would fill the neighborhood. Procuring a loaf or two from Virginia was a real treat!
She had a gift for writing poetry and short snippets. She also liked working on jigsaw puzzles, chair yoga, bingo, and Wheel of Fortune.
Virginia is survived by: sons Scott (Erlinda), Kent (Debbie), son-in-law Greg Smith, grandchildren Kendra Porter (Dan), Joshua Smith (Michelle), Lindsay Wright (Scotty), Lea Spiers, great-grandchildren Andrew Porter, Austin Porter, Abby Smith, Elle Smith, Madalynn Wright, and SJ Wright.
She was preceded in death by her husband Homer, daughter Karen Smith, and siblings Bob, Marjorie, Bill, and Shirley.
A celebration of life service is still in planning, details to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her name to Community of Christ church, Special Olympics, or a charity of your choice.
