Floyd L. Watkins

February 23, 1930 — August 16, 2015

Floyd L. Watkins, 85 of Independence, MO passed away Sunday, August 16, 2015 at his residence. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Friday evening at the chapel. Donations may be made in his name to the Summit Grove congregation of the Community of Christ. Floyd was born February 23, 1930 in Independence, MO to Edgar H. and Mary Alice (Welborn) Watkins and has been a lifelong area resident. He graduated from William Chrisman in 1949 and proudly served in the US Army from 1951-53 in the Korean Conflict later graduating from Graceland College in 1955 with a degree in engineering. He had worked for nearly 30 years for the Independence Fire Department until he retired as Battalion Chief in 1993. He also worked as a master electrician and building contractor. He enjoyed spending time at his home at Lake Lotawana, traveling, attending sporting events, old cars and mostly spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Summit Grove congregation of the Community of Christ where he served as deacon and member of the building committee. He was also a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, the VFW and retired firefighters group. He is survived by; his loving wife of 57 years, Judy of the home; his children, Charles David Watkins and his wife Lori, Susan G. Watkins and Mark Thomas Watkins and his wife Tracy all of Independence, MO; a brother, William Watkins of Independence, MO; 9 grandchildren, Cailey, Zachary, Thomas Floyd, Eva, Andrea, Grant, Kyle, Morgan and Gavin; 7 great grandchildren, Joleigh, Reed, Dylan, Levi, Kinslee, Emerson and Henri and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Ralph, Edgar and Robert and a grandson, Mason Watkins.
