Sandra Jo Watson, 72 of Independence, MO, passed away, Sunday, May 8, 2011 at John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, MO. Cremation is planned with a graveside inurnment scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Buckner Hill Cemetery in Buckner, MO. Donations may be made in her name to Wayside Waifs. Sandra was born August 27, 1938 in Independence, MO to Robert W. and Marian (Latta) Vaughn. Sandra graduated public schools and received a BA in English, a MA in Education. She was a reading specialist, education specialist and an adjunct professor for UMKC and LD specialist. She began her career as a teacher at the age of 40 and had taught 8th grade English for 18 years at Palmer Middle School and later taught English and English Literature and Composition over 4 years at Truman High School before she retired in 1991. She was a published author and had works published in the KC Star, Readers Digest and had two of her poems published in separate books of poetry. She was a member of the National Education Association. She was also an active member in the Blue Ridge Blvd United Methodist Church until her health declined. Sandra was a strong advocate for animal cruelty. She is survived by; a son, Jeffrey Watson; a daughter, Jana; 2 sisters, Sheila Ancona and Michelle Liddle; her stepfather, Charles Brammer, 3 grandchildren, Heather, Whitney and Jeffrey Jr., and 3 great-grandchildren, Railey, Isaac and Landen. She was also preceded in death by our brother Robert K. Vaughn.
