Kathryn H. Whitfield, 73, of Independence, MO passed March 26, 2013 at her home. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Another visitation will take place from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29, at the First Presbyterian Church of Louisiana, MO. Services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, at the First Presbyterian Church of Louisiana. Kathryn was born May 3, 1939 in Louisiana, MO to Doss and Ethel (Esterbrook) Henry. She was a 72 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Haney Pennock Unit 370 of Louisiana, MO, serving four different terms as President. She was past 9th District Secretary and Sgt. At Arms. She served a term as State Sgt. at Arms and Chairman of Pages. Served on a number of Unit, District and State committees. She was also a member of Salon 94 of the 8 and 40 of the American Legion Auxiliary. Kathryn was a member of the VFW Auxiliary 2513 in Warrensburg, MO and has served in various offices and on committees in the Unit and the District. She was a very proud member of the Tarrara Court 83 of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Louisiana, MO, where she had served as a Deacon. Among her awards was the Chapel of Four Chaplain’s Legion of Honor Award in 2010, which reads in part, “in recognition of your service to all people regardless of race or faith.” She was retired from the Bemis Corporation as a printer and worked for the Louisiana School District for a few years. Kathryn was preceded in death by two brothers, William “Bill” Henry and Doss Henry Jr.. She is survived by her husband, James “Jim” S. Whitfield of the home; daughter, Kim Henry Romero and husband Sonny of Tucson, AZ; son Kelly R. Henry of Louisiana, MO; granddaughter, Nichole Henry of Mexico, MO; grandson, Matthew Dawson Henry of Bowling Green, MO; sister, Wilma Flansberg of Independence, MO; brother, Oscar Babe Henry of Louisiana, MO; and several nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary 370, Presbyterian Church of Louisiana Window Fund, American Cancer Society or to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care.
