William “Bill” Joseph Downey, II, age 89, passed away on December 22, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri.
Bill was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 7, 1936, he was the son to William Joseph Downey, Sr. and Genevieve Downey (Brown). The family moved to Independence, Mo. and Bill graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1954. He spent more than 42 years working at Commercial Lithographic as a lithographer, a career that reflected his dedication, strong work ethic, and pride in providing for his family.
A lifelong lover of sports, Bill enjoyed playing golf and spent many years coaching volleyball and softball teams. He was an avid collector of baseball and football cards and a devoted fan of the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. He could often be found at the flea market or proudly attending any and every sporting event to support those he loved.
Bill was a loving father and grandfather, known for his strong will, larger-than-life personality, and unmistakable voice. He was generous to a fault, willing to give anyone the shirt off his back, and remembered by all as a kind, good-hearted man who cared deeply for others.
He is survived by his children: Bill Downey III (Ruth); Jamie Atkins (Darin); Jonas Downey; Melissa Gabbert (John); Stephanie Spruill; Michayla Downey (Gabe). His love and joy extended to 14 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren & 1 great-great grandchild. He is also survived by his four siblings: Pat Downey, Nita Cochran (Cody), Mary Reed (Raymond) & Sally Rodgers.
A devoted father, proud grandfather, sibling and true Kansas City sports fan, Bill’s legacy lives on through the love he gave and the memories he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, 1-3pm at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, Missouri. Donations can be made in his honor to the Negro League Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.
