Richard Winter

March 6, 1920 — June 14, 2010

Richard H. “Dick” Winter, 90, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away June 14, 2010 at his home. He was born March 6, 1920, son of Irving and Mildred (McDonald) Winter in Alton, Illinois. Dick and Elizabeth (Betty) Wise married March 11, 1941. He served in the 70th Infantry during WWII and received a purple heart for injuries sustained in a land mine incident on Feb. 26, 1945. Richard also received 2 overseas service bars, an American Campaign Medal, a European-Africian-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 bronze battle stars and a WWII Victory Medal. After the war, Dick and Betty settled in Independence in 1946 and he worked for Standard Oil Co. in Sugar Creek until his retirement in 1965. They spent many years traveling around the world and by the 1980s they were content to hop between residences in Lee’s Summit and Honolulu, Hawaii. Dick is preceded in death by his wife, Betty, after 67 years of marriage. He is survived by this three children and spouses, Dick and Floy Winter, Patt and Jim Lawlor and Bob and Sandy Winter: grandsons Kevin Brown, Rich Winter, Mike Winter, Tom Winter and Chris Gehm: and seven great grandchildren. Our thanks to Hannah, Robin, Fawn and Heather and Sherri for their love and care to the entire family. We also want to acknowledge the constant care given by Crossroads Hospice. A visitation will be held from 9-11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 21, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Burial to follow at Mt. Washington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crossroads Hospice or Truman Medical Center Lakewood, long term care.
